Once the questions were asked (75 of them in all), a group of eight top-level cooks and one top-level dealer took the time to sit down and answer the questions as honestly as they could so that they could try to give you a real look inside their world, and their minds.

- How can I tell if someone I know is using meth?

Never before have such a group of professional meth cooks, dealers, and users gotten together to open up and tell everything they know. These are the real experts on the subject of methamphetamine, and their insight, which may not always be in agreement with one another, and can, at times, be contrary to themselves, is very valuable in understanding why so many people are destroying their lives and families to chase this particular high.

I want to take a moment to tell you how this book came to be, and to thank those who helped me in this project.
Over the last couple of years, I have written four meth-inspired books. After people read the latest book to come out, I am usually bombarded with questions about this or that aspect of the meth lifestyle. Obviously, those questions come mostly from people who have never used meth, or been around others while they were using it. Something else I have noticed over the years is that meth users from different areas around the country can answer the same questions totally different. Sometimes the answers will be in agreement, and at other times they will be completely contradictory to each other.
I got to thinking about this, and thought to myself, "Why not get a bunch of non-meth users to ask the questions they would like answered if they were placed in front of a panel of actual users and cooks." So, that is where the book you are reading now came from.
I have spent the last couple of months asking people what questions they would like answered. The questioners come from many walks of life; doctors, lawyers, business owners, factory workers, fellow book authors, and a millionaire or two. Basically, you average, every day people who would not be caught dead in or around a meth lab. Their questions, for the most part, seemed to be close to the same, with one or two curve balls thrown in that I would not have expected someone to ask.
Once I received all the questions, I sat down with a friend and we grouped the questions together. We wanted to be sure we answered to everyone's curiosity but, without having the exact same question asked in different ways. That can get redundant after a while.
After we had rewritten some of the questions to make them a little more clear, I made copies of all the questions I decided to use and started handing the questionnaires out to my volunteers, all top-level meth cooks and/or dealers, so that they could give me answers to the questions they wanted to address. My only instructions were 1) Please watch the language, 2) Be completely honest, 3) Do not discuss your answers with anyone else so that your answers will not be influenced by what someone else has to say. In sticking with these rules, I wrote my own answers to the questions that I chose to answer before reading anyone else's answers. Not everyone answered every question but that is okay. Sometimes a question hits a little close to home and becomes uncomfortable to talk about.
