Not illustrated. 1898 Excerpt: ...the old English chronicles were the only ones that existed till the recent publication of the Rolls Series of historical works, and of some, his are still the only editions in print. He was appointed to a post in the Bodleian library in 1701, and in 1712 became second keeper of that institution. Herrick, Robert (1591-1674).--Hesperides: The Poems and other Remains of Robert Herrick with Portrait. Edited by W. Carew Hazlitt. 2 vols. 1890. The " Hesperides" was first published in 1648, when Herrick was fifty-seven years old. Hallam see "Literature of Europe") gives a flattering review of this poet's writings. The " Memoir" is given vol. i. pp. vii.-xxxv. It is enlarged and revised from the "Biographical Notice" by Mr. S. W. Singer, published in 1846 (see British Poets). The " Hesperides" is reprinted from the edition of 1648, and gives the poems as presented by the author to the public. The "Noble Numbers" is reprinted from the edition of 1647. After the " Biographical Notice" are printed (vol. i. pp. xxxvi.-xlix.) fourteen letters written by the poet to his uncle, Sir William Herrick, between 1613 and 1617. They are principally applications for money. Some poems which Mr. Hazlitt in earlier editions claimed as Herrick's and which were included in the Appendix of the edition published in 1869 are withdrawn in the edition under description. They "can clearly be shown to belong to other "writers." Herrick is memorable for his descriptions of old English country life, in its wakes, wassails, sports of Christmas-tide and Twelfth-Night, the May-day games and harvest home romps.
